Center. ORHPA President, Keith McDaniel presided at the meeting. There were 51
people present (see attachment l on file).
Keith McDaniel introduced special guests for the evening, filmmakers, Michael
Samstag of Knoxville Films, Nicholas Cornett of Knickknack Hollywood Productions
and Barry Battles of Coming Soon Productions Inc.
Keith McDaniel asked Bobbie Martin to come to the front of the room. He
presented Bobbie Martin with a “Certificate of Recognition and Grateful
Appreciation for Volunteer Service as Organizer and Manager of the ORHPA Secret
City Festival Display Rooms and All of the Heritage Exhibitors From 2002 through
2007.”
Mick Wiest, Chairman of the ORHPA Historic Sites Committee, announced the
committee has chosen to present two awards to special buildings in the community
this year. The Heritage Award will be presented to the National Oceanographic
and Atmospheric Administration building on South Illinois Avenue at 11 a.m. on
Wednesday, September 19th and to the Red Cross building on the Oak Ridge
Turnpike at 11:45 a.m. on Wednesday, September 19th. General Groves chose the
site for Oak Ridge on September 19, 1943. The NOAA building was the first
medical facility built for the Manhattan Project workers in Oak Ridge and the
Red Cross building was the building used for assigning housing during the
earliest days. The engraved award plaques, being presented to each of the
building owners, are being donated by Tom Tuck and TN Bank. This is the first
year we are presenting an award to a privately owned building and to a
government owned building as well. In past years we have only presented an award
to a privately owned building. Tom Tuck and TN Bank have donated the award
plaques we have presented each of the last several years.
Keith McDaniel, who is also the founder of the Secret City Film Festival,
presented a 30 minute screening of short film clips harvested from the many
wonderful films being presented at the upcoming Secret City Film Festival set
for October 4 through October 7th at the Oak Ridge Playhouse in Jackson Square.
The first evening of the Film Festival,
ORHPA - Minutes Membership Meeting September 14, 2007 page 2
October 4, will be “Family Night” open to the public, free of charge. The hours
on Thursday evening will be 5 to 9:15 p.m. The Film Festival will continue
through the weekend with awards being presented on Sunday evening, October 7th.
More information is available at www.secretcityfilmfestival.com .
Keith then showed a 10 minute segment of the documentary movie, “Arid Lands”,
about the beginnings of the town of Hanford, Washington during the Manhattan
Project. The pictures of row upon row of mobile homes looked eerily similar to
photographs taken here in Oak Ridge of the same time period. This film will be
shown in its entirety (98 minutes) at the Film Festival on Sunday morning,
October 7 at 9 a.m.
The final film presentation was a short movie entitled “Mr. Extion” by Filmmaker
Michael Samstag. The film title is pronounced “misdirection.” The movie was a
dark comedy and was enjoyed by all.
We want to thank Heidi and Dave Miller for providing the popcorn, candy and
sodas for the evening.
Keith McDaniel announced the award winning movie, “The Clinton 12” will be shown
on PBS on November 5th.
Our next membership meeting is scheduled for October 11, at 7 p.m. The topic of
the evening’s presentation will be the Energy Communities Alliance Meeting which
took place in August of this year in Washington, DC. At this meeting,
representatives from Oak Ridge, Los Alamos and Hanford met to discuss heritage
and preservation activities within their respective communities.
The meeting adjourned at 8:15 p.m.
Minutes respectfully submitted,
